I Solemnly Swear That I Am Up To No Good

Viktor came to find me a little while ago and we went for a walk because he wanted to talk privately.
He wanted to know if I thought I would be in danger if he (Viktor) won the Tournament.
I guess Professor Siz talked to Cedric Diggory and told him not to win. Maybe not in so many words, but he understood clearly enough. Anyway, Diggory found Viktor yesterday to talk to him about it.
Viktor said Diggory didn't EXACTLY try to persuade him to not win, on purpose, or anything like that. He just told him what Siz had said, and then said, 'I thought it would only be fair to give you the warning I got. It's up to you whether you do anything about it.'
Viktor said, 'Are you saying they'd take it out on Sally-Anne?'
And Diggory said, 'No, I'm not saying that. I don't know what they'd do. But she's a half-blood, she doesn't have a family to protect her, and she's not going to get to leave the Protectorate once the Tournament is over, the way you will.'
So Viktor wanted to know what I thought: WAS I going to be in danger?
And really I don't know. But I thought about it and said I think mostly I'm beneath notice. If Harry doesn't win, the Lord Protector will be angry. Remember what happened after the second task, at the Frost Faire? THAT'S the sort of thing that happens when he's angry. Susan Bones has talked about Diggory a bit and he's protective of people. Not just his friends, but his whole House, and even beyond his House when he can. He wants to take care of people. So maybe he reckons that the only way to keep people safe is to persuade all the champions to just let Harry win, and the best way to persuade Viktor is to convince him that if Viktor wins, something awful will happen to me. Or maybe Diggory really DOES think something bad will happen to me if Viktor wins.
I think if Harry doesn't win, though, mostly the Lord Protector will blame Harry. And the people who really ought to be worried are Hermione and Draco. I said that to Viktor and he got very quiet (I mean, even quieter than he is normally) and then we came back to the castle.
I think he's decided not to win, either. I don't know if Diggory talked to Fleur. I do know this isn't all a ruse to make it between Harry and himself, though, Diggory's not an idiot plus he really did have a long conversation with Professor Siz and came out looking upset, like she'd told him something he didn't want to think about or didn't want to hear.

Makes the tournament look like quite a farce, doesn't it?

Date: 2012-06-11 07:44 pm (UTC)I almost don't care who wins so long as nothing awful happens after, though.

Date: 2012-06-11 08:09 pm (UTC)I do think he was just being careful, though. And looking out for you.
Harry has been looking ill all day. I think he pretty well knows he's got to win too.

Date: 2012-06-11 08:33 pm (UTC)Does that mean Viktor thinks you'd be in danger because he took you to the Yule Ball? Or he thinks there are people who think it's more than that--like that he's been seeing you or something, all this time?
I mean, who thinks that?

You haven't.
Right?

Date: 2012-06-11 08:54 pm (UTC)I mean, okay. So you didn't.
I never thought you did.
Only-
Well, you've got to admit, it's daft that you'd be in danger because of Krum if he goes and wins the tournament. That's like someone's thinking you'd been sneaking around with him or something. And it's not as if anyone's saying that.
So don't get cross. I agree. It's totally not on.

Date: 2012-06-11 11:16 pm (UTC)Diggory didn't talk to Fleur but I know Professor Froissart had words with her and they weren't quite what she wanted to hear. She's well cross and blames it on Madame Froissart being Mr Malfoy's sister.
I say, I do agree that it's quite unlikely anyone would look to you if Krum were to cause Marvolo to lose face. It's unfortunate that the competition has ultimately come down to a pointless exercise, what? They might as well give Marvolo the trophy and have done with it but I suppose then we'd lose our evening's excitement. Or 'excitement,' if you prefer.
