Thanks a lot for lending me 'Pure Hunger.'
You said halfbloods aren't mentioned, but they're there, it's just they're classified as 'purebloods' because they can trace ancestry back to a pureblood wizard. I kept wondering while reading if the idea is that at some point all the half-bloods had married purebloods and then the quarter-bloods married purebloods and after enough generations no one cared anymore so everyone was just 'pure,' or if the idea is that ANYONE who has pureblood ancestry is automatically a pureblood in this world and even Amaranth could actually be a halfblood (they never say anything about her maternal grandparents, unless I missed something, I was reading sort of fast because I wanted to find out what happened next.)
I think whether or not Amaranth is related to Godric Gryffindor she'd surely have been Sorted into Gryffindor. She'd be, like, the token clever Gryffindor who's good at putting together a decent plan, but the Hat looks partly at what you want, you know? And she clearly values courage more than she values her cleverness, even though it's usually her cleverness that saves her in the end.
The author did some good research on living off the land but you know, given that she DOES have a wand she could have used it to hunt, instead of just setting snares. Unless her aim is just TERRIBLE! Although I suppose it might be noticed. The stuff about how food tastes when you're really hungry was dead on, though.

Date: 2012-01-25 12:39 am (UTC)When I said halfbloods weren't mentioned, I meant they never actually use that word, or even seem to have a concept of it. Everyone's just pureblood, muggle, or mudblood. It's interesting, don't you think? I wonder what gave the author the idea to keep it to only pureblooded and non-pureblooded (plus muggles).
I happen to think Efrain would have been sorted into Slytherin, don't you?
I have a theory that Amaranth doesn't use her wand to hunt because she knows that if the Enforcers catch her carrying around a dead animal, they'll be able to tell whether it died by a wand or by a snare, and a snare would get her into a lot less trouble.
I didn't really like the bits about eating squirrels and rabbits and such, but I suppose that'd what one would do if they were starving. It's sort of a privilege to be able to not eat them, just because you think they're helpless and sweet.
