Daphne, I think I speak for both me and Pansy when I offer our sincere congratulations....for being the subject of the most diverting and unlikely gossip that's circulated all year!

Pansy can tell you ALL about wedding planning, since her mum just got married. You've got a good long while to plan for it, though seeing as we're only in our THIRD YEAR.

(Honestly. People will believe ANYTHING.)

Oh my... I didn't even know what was going on but this explains why Hufflepuffs kept saying "congratulations!" to me at breakfast.

This isn't funny! I've researched Mr Crouch from cradle to the field, and he's not the sort of person who will find this amusing in the least!

No, I think I just told Samantha Montgomery so she wouldn't make a fool of herself by assuming they were from Blaise.

But you know how this school is. Gossip travels faster than a snitch on a hurry-up potion.

He can't blame you, really. I mean, you acted entirely properly.

Well, I tried telling Linus Moon he didn't know what he was talking about, but I suppose he'd rather believe a gaggle of Hufflepuffs than your roommate...

Well, Moon's cleverer with books than the average Hufflepuff but he's the sort of clever that gets soaked to the skin in a rainfall before it occurs to him 'oh right, I could cast a water-repelling charm!'

Boys like to think gossip is a girl thing but they are TEN times worse, every last one of them. The ones who want you to think they couldn't possibly care less about romance are the absolute worst gossips of ALL.

Oh, like Smith and Corner, always going on about girly things? Only I don't suppose they really gossip - they discuss it right out in the open, as if no one else can read!

Well, there's one thing: at least Smith didn't drop by Moon's diary this morning (at least he hadn't, last I looked).

I honestly think that's your saving grace, Daphs. The fact that huffles and claws are burbling about it while the people that'd really know are saying it's not what they think.

So Auror Crouch can't think it'd have come from you, because then the Slytherins would all have bought it instead of the rumour mill from other houses taking a few scraps and running with it.

And how on earth people can get from "returned flowers" to "engaged" is beyond me.

Well, it isn't entirely beyond me.

Patil asked me, you know, if they were from Blaise, so I thought it best to clear it up. I told her who it was from, and that I thought the colour was probably due to a mistake on his or his assistant's part, she instantly jumped to the fact that you might be attached. I did my best to tell her that wasn't the case at all, and that Auror Crouch might get angry at her presumption, but I'd bet the root of this is with Patil. Padma, I mean, not Parvati.

Padma can be a good friend but she's got some terribly naïve ideas about boys and relationships, if you know what I mean.

It's not like she doesn't already have a reputation for being a bit of a gossip, so it wouldn't have hurt her to go to the source. But we've been chatty lately, so I guess she figured I'd be more likely to spill than you?

And I know what you mean. I think she's got some really old-fashioned ideas about Romance and Love.

Well, whatever her reasoning, I'm a little displeased.

More than just old-fashioned...I mean, she seemed to think she could march Grant Page around Hogsmeade and Ravenclaw corner like he was her boyfriend, but then she only wanted him to be her boyfriend in those public places and nowhere else. How could she not have known the he would get bored of that?

I don't think she was ever going to let it go any further than that because he's not Indian and her parents wouldn't approve.

Which means that any boy that fancies her at this school is going to have to get used to disappointment.
